Jean

Jean

For this portrait, I was visualizing on a something that looks relaxed. You know, those moments when you just want to hang around with your book and a glass of wine. I was thinking soft lighting from one side coming from a window.

Lighting is quite simple. Got my hands on the biggest light modifier i have. the scrim from my cheapo 5in1 reflector is the biggest and most practical I have. I do have a 100cm octa but setting it up is really a pain in the butt! I thought it faster and easier to set up an extra stand and a reflector holder than deal with 8 rods from my octa. To imitate the light from the window (it was dark, grey and raining outside when we were shooting this, so real window light is not really an option), i placed the scrim as close as possible to him with my Quadra on the other side. and bam! "window" light! the window is not that big though.

by the way, the scrim is the only thing i'm keeping with my 5in1. the damn thing is starting to flake out and I have silver and gold dust over me now. what i get from being cheap.

Cuddy has always been great when I ask her to stay for a photo. But when she feels like doing that (photo), it's a challenge to make her sit back up.

For this photo I tried to experiment more with using a scrim (from a 5in1 reflector) as a light modifier. I have a 100cm octabox but it's a big hassle to set up!

I never wanted this 365 project to be a very personal. I intend to still do it that way, but today is something special. I celebrate a personal achievement of being smoke-free for a month today.

Yey!

On a photo related note, of course I did not do this with one photo. The "smoke" photo is about 3 years old. It is a smoke from a mosquito coil not from cigarettes of which has a different quality and color.

HA!

This photo evolved from a "Spider-man"-like concept to this. The gun is a broken .45 cal BB gun I had for a while but never had the chance (read: concept) until now.

It would've not been possible (it is still possible but it would take a longer time) without my wife's help. She pressed the shutter this time.

Sometimes laziness can bring you somewhere unexpectedly good.

It took me more than an hour to make this miniature mini cooper interesting. I went from plain white to plain black back ground but found them boring. Add bokeh to make it more interesting right? Then, it took me more time to figure out a nice angle and lighting with the bokeh.

When I was happy with the angle and light with my LP120, I thought the bottom half of the frame was too dark. Here's where the laziness came in. I was too lazy to put up another stand and strobe for the bottom half. I remembered i had this led bike light in my drawer and since i was exposing for 2 seconds, why not "paint" it with light.

I did couple of exposures for the bottom half, sides, front, etc and masked them together in post. I figured it was easier that way. Ended up using 3 frames only.

I wish i could say that she ate, chewed or destroyed something in our house and gave me this look while I was scolding her.

It's those moments that would just melt you heart, right? When you would, if your a dog owner or lover, place your hand on your chest and would say "awww..."

But Cuddy, isn't like that. She doesn't chew stuff at home except for her own toys. She's toilet trained and just pooped and peed at home only when she can't hold it in anymore. She's been with us for almost 4 years now.

And we can't wait for her to meet the little one soon.

For a while now, I am more and more shifting back to using bridge. I like the simplicity and speed compared to other applications I've used.

The photo above is a product of my experimentation in Camera Raw. I was looking for a look that says summer, sun, fun. I was trying salvage boring photos i took from an event last night.

I saved the preset. drop me an email if you want to use or improve it. preset trade anyone?

Just another night at our living room. This was supposed to be a one light exercise but turned out to be four freaking lights.

TipsyTuesday Post: Using a Shoot thru umbrella

A lot of shooters I know and follow on the internet is not really a big fan of shoot thrus. They say because of its parabolic shape, it throws light everywhere. It's hard to control. It is of course 100% true. But for the shooter on a budget or starting shooters, this is the first light modifier we usually have.

When I first got my lights. just 2 strobes with no intensity control (Forgot the term but its like a simple light bulb. I still have it to this day), it came with two umbrellas, one reflective and a shoot thru. The first time i was using them, I kept on using the shoot thru as a reflective. until i saw somewhere online that its actually called a shoot thru umbrella and i just figured why not put it the other way around. Genius, right?

Back to the tip.

I guess the strength of a shoot thru is that you can put it really close to your subject and produce a very soft light.

I use them all the time specially on location. it's easy to put up, easy to pack. Be careful when using it outdoors on a windy day though. go figure.

It's a very versatile piece of gear and dirt cheap too!

As usual, click on the photo for larger version.

Isn't it nice that I keep on posting photos of my wife and instead of mine? It's easier that way too.

Half of the year

Half of the year

Made it halfway through this project. I am glad. Just glad and not happy.

Glad that, so far I am able to do what this project is for. To use my camera more.

Glad that I am discovering and learning a lot. I guess that's the only way to go in this field, experience.

What I am not happy about is that as far as I've already gone with this thing, I still don't know what's missing. It's not there and I don't know what it is.

Let's see what happens in the next half. That's the only way to find out.
