Sadness and Inspiration

Sur-Rounded

I was in Hong Kong yesterday to attend a quick informal gathering of some photogs. The organizers invite people in the industry to speak about their works or whatever they want to share photo-related.

Laurence Lai talked about his beginnings and spoke about his passion. The guy is first a businessman then a photographer when he started. His short talk is thought provoking and inspiring at the same time. What I liked about him is he definitely understood something about the business of fine art photography or simply put it the business of selling your photos/prints, not so much of your photo services.

Interesting, very interesting.

I've always wanted to do this, to photograph someone playing with water and splashing it around. It's been raining here all day and we found a good spot for a make shift night studio (just below our building) with pools of rain water. I thought of giving it a quick try.

My lighting wasn't what i had in mind. I would've added a front fill but forgot to bring my other flash. I did bring the stand for it though but I just forgot to put the unit in my bag. well, there's always a next time.

Since the 5D Mark II has no multiple exposure feature (one of the things I like with Nikon cameras), I had no choice but to layer it in PS.

Tip #1: play around with blending modes! I used screen blending mode for this one if you're wondering.

Tip #2: Visualize the final image before shooting or at least put your camera on a tripod for easier blending.

Wheelin' it back to the future

Nothing much to say. So here are the photos.

saw this guy in Mongkok, Hong Kong yesterday. He's part of a circus group that will open a show sometime in November at HKAPA.

A bad, bad attempt on recreating the photo on the right. Will try it again with better clothing, it should be really close to the old photo (left) and maybe shoot it when we go visit the actual place. But this lady does it really well.

It's going to be a great family project if I get the hang of it.

This would've been a smoking/cigarette photo. It asks for a smoke don't you think? I would've done it but in preparation for fatherhood, I'm on my 9th nicotine-free day.

It would be so cool to have my own photo (I prefer a photo by me) projected on a building facade.

This shot was made from just one photograph. A mixture of long exposure and rear curtain sync.

Shot through a window glass. My photo was a actually my own reflection.

Click on the photo to appreciate more.

bummer!

shot was made from 2 photos. one exposed for the moon (using the "moony 11" rule) and one for the clouds and the silhouette of the building. when doing this kind of shots, meaning compositing, remember to bracket.

A week of new views

I was gonna open this entry with "slowly, we are getting back to normal" and I just remembered we are expecting our little one in a few months. At least the moving is finished. Now we can concentrate on the baby.

Here's what i "saw" the previous days.

There is just something about this photo that i like. maybe it's the colors. maybe it's the triangle their heads form. i don't know. it's not a nice photo but there is something in it that i really like. or maybe its just me.

Getting Back to Basics

Open

TipsyTuesday

Sometimes when your creative juices has dried up, the best thing to do is stop and get back to basics. In photography, sometimes (or most of the time) we get too technical about everything from camera use to lighting techniques to gear/equipment, etc and we tend to forget the real essence of it.

It's a very sensitive topic and I am in NO position to talk about the real essence of photography but here's my 2 cents worth. Photography is much like any other art form but the difference is we use a very "technically challenging" tool to express and/or document what we see or what we feel.

What I'm trying to say is just let it go. Just shoot what you feel is picture worthy.

Not the movie. i was waiting to see how much i can have after 5pm to shoot with the sun as my light for my shoot tomorrow. i have around 1.5hours. i hope its enough.

some sidenote:
6 years ago, a group of dancers and vocalist flew to Hong Kong to be part of HKDL's opening team. I am thankful and proud to be part of that team. It seems like it was just yesterday.
