Dance is one of my favorite photo subjects. Maybe i could say that it's my "specialty". Being a professional dancer for a little over a decade, i picked up a few lighting "must haves" in shooting dance by observing how the lighting designers light dance performances.

one of them is sidelighting. It's is my personal goal to give dancers a sidelight when ever possible. I don't, of course have to worry about it when shooting live performances because one, i don't have control over the lights and two, it's almost always there.

But in a photo session may it be in studio or outdoors. Sidelighting will not just separate your subject from your back ground it will also define their lines. Dancers, especially those with ballet training, work really hard to get those beautiful lines and it is our job as photographers to showcase what they've worked on for years.
